A night of a rout. In the early hours of Monday, Inter Milan destroyed Roma at the Giuseppe Meazza and stretched their lead at the top of the Italian Championship even further. There were five goals, including a brace from Lautaro Martínez and a collective display to make any rival still thinking about the title green with envy.
Dominance beyond question
The match was decided within the first 45 minutes. Marcus Thuram burst down the right in the very first minute and set up Lautaro Martínez to open the scoring. Roma responded and drew level in the 40th minute, with Gianluca Mancini heading home. But the visitors’ relief lasted exactly two minutes: Hakan Çalhanoğlu struck from long range with surgical precision and put Internazionale back in front before the halftime whistle.
In the second half, the Milan side simply swallowed up the team from the capital. Lautaro completed his brace in the 52nd minute. Three minutes later, Thuram found the net and made it four, and Inter reached the fifth with a finish from inside the box. Roma did pull one back as a consolation through Lorenzo Pellegrini, but the final score of 5-2 already reflected exactly the gulf between the two teams at this moment.
With the result, Internazionale reached 72 points and continue to breathe comfortably at the top of the table. Roma, on 54, remain in sixth place – far too distant for any conversation about the scudetto.
