Lyon target Julien Duranville for just €5.5M to fill the gap left by Afonso Moreira

Olympique Lyonnais are moving to sign the 20-year-old Belgian winger Julien Duranville as a direct replacement for Afonso Moreira, who is set to leave the club for Bayer Leverkusen for 32 million euros. The operation represents a risky bet: the young wide man, once tipped as a future Ballon d’Or winner, hands the Germans a product below expectations.

Afonso Moreira’s departure and the financial urgency

Lyon ended last season with a convincing on-field performance, but the numbers on the spreadsheets tell a different story. The club needs to balance its books before facing the scrutiny of the DNCG, the French body responsible for the financial control of clubs. Selling Afonso Moreira is practically certain: Bayer Leverkusen put 32 million euros on the table, and the Lyon board are unlikely to turn down a considerable sum for the left side of the attack. The recruitment department rushed to find a solution and targeted Duranville, still tied to Borussia Dortmund.

Duranville: the prodigy who became a problem at BVB

Two years ago, Vincent Kompany – now manager of Bayern Munich – spoke of the Belgian with admiration he could barely hide. “I worked with him at Anderlecht when he was 15 or 16. I helped get him his debut against Club Brugge just after his sixteenth birthday. We quickly noticed the impact he had: he changed the game. At that age, that’s very rare,” the coach declared, going so far as to claim that Duranville would one day be a Ballon d’Or winner.

The journey, however, belied the enthusiasm. Dortmund laid out 13 million euros in 2023 to take him from Anderlecht. Three years later, the German club recoups just 5.5 million euros on the sale – not counting possible bonuses. Worse than the financial loss is the sporting record: 27 official games in the BVB shirt, one goal and one assist. For a player sold as a phenomenon in the making, it’s an indefensible return.

What Lyon hope to gain from the bet

From Lyon’s point of view, the logic is clear. For 5.5 million euros, the club acquire a young player, technically gifted and with a momentarily depreciated market value. It’s an opportunity buy. The risk exists – Duranville has yet to show consistency at the top level – but the low price reduces the exposure.

If the winger can deliver on the Rhône even a fraction of what he promised as a teenager, the deal could turn out to be one of the best of the French summer market. Otherwise, Lyon will have added one more name to the list of bets that never materialized.
