Half of the world top 10 skip IEM Atlanta 2026

ESL has released the participant list for IEM Atlanta 2026, and the result was a cold shower for CS2 fans. G2 Esports, Team Spirit, MOUZ, Team Falcons, FURIA, Parivision and The MongolZ simply crossed the event off their calendar. The tournament, scheduled for May 17-19 in Atlanta, will feature only three teams from the top 10 of Valve’s world ranking.

Who’s going and who stayed home

Leading the main line-up are Team Vitality, FaZe Clan and Team Liquid – heavyweight names that lend the event some shine. NAVI and Astralis round out the group of favorites. The awkward surprise is BC.Game: the organization sits just 22nd in February’s VRS and arrives as the most unlikely underdog of the group stage.

On the side of the absentees, the names speak for themselves. G2 and Spirit lead the world ranking and won’t give up the points that truly matter – those from Majors and PGL. For those fighting directly for a spot at IEM Cologne, every decision counts.

Why the giants pulled out

ESL’s 2026 calendar is suffocating. IEM Katowice, the ESL Pro League and the PGL event series pile up without respite. Making a transatlantic trip right after the battles in Katowice would be a recipe for burnout. Team Spirit’s history reinforces this logic: the team had already skipped Melbourne after the exhausting post-PGL Astana cycle. The reasoning is always the same – preserve performance for where VRS points really weigh.

In the end, Atlanta became a victim of CS2’s own international schedule. It’s not a lack of respect for the event; it’s the pragmatism of those who know that a Major is worth more than any intermediate tournament.

The vacuum creates a real opportunity for those below the radar

The absence of the giants opens a rare window. For teams inhabiting the middle of the VRS, playing a tournament without G2 and Spirit in the bracket is the ideal scenario to rack up points without facing maximum resistance. Fnatic, OG, Alliance and EYEBALLERS – who drew attention after a spirited showing against FaZe at BLAST Bounty – will fight for two spots in the main stage through the closed qualifiers, set for February 10-12.

On the American side, Passion UA leads the race for a regional spot, with Wildcard and BOSS trying to block the path. Only two extra spots are up for grabs. The tournament format follows the classic model: 16 teams split into two groups, a GSL stage in best-of-three, six qualifiers per group and a best-of-five final. For Vitality, chasing the next Intel Grand Slam, any slip on American soil would be a serious problem.
