Calgary Wild lead PSL Canada with two games to seal the title
The first season of the Premier Soccer League Canada in its current format is coming to an end, and the race could not be tighter. Titles being sealed, relegations taking shape and playoff spots still up for grabs: last week’s round delivered all of it at once.
Calgary Wild on the brink of the trophy
Even without playing last week, Calgary Wild U-23 remain clear at the top of the women’s table. A combination of draws by Calgary Blizzard and Calgary Foothills on Friday helped the leaders keep their advantage without taking the field. With a game in hand, the team is comfortably placed to confirm the title as early as the next round.
The calendar is favorable: the Wild face Calgary Rangers on Thursday and Friday. Two wins are enough to lift the trophy. On Tuesday, Foothills had beaten Calgary Villains 2-1, with a goal from forward Izzy Di Palma in the 83rd minute. On Friday, Blizzard and Foothills drew.
Prairies Premier League wraps up its debut campaign
To the east, the Prairies Premier League concluded its inaugural campaign. The title went to Bonivital, confirmed in the previous round. The competition’s overall balance is encouraging: all six teams won at least two matches, and the goal-difference gap between the best and worst side came down to just ten goals, between +3 and -7. For a league in its first year of existence, that level of balance is a clear sign the structure works.
In the closing stretch, Sask Excel Academy beat Lucania FC 2-1 on Thursday, with Elly Mitchell scoring twice, including the decisive goal in the 86th minute. FC Manitoba also won, 2-0 over Thunder Bay Chill. QC United closed the round with another 2-0, this time over Lucania, with two goals in two minutes.
OPL decides relegations and the cup final
In the Ontario Premier League, Simcoe County Rovers sealed back-to-back titles after beating FC London 2-0 on Saturday, reaching their 14th win of the season. Their lead over NDC Ontario grew to nine points with two games left, making the title mathematically untouchable.
At the other end of the table, North Mississauga were relegated to OPL2 after a 2-0 loss to North Toronto Nitros on Wednesday. The fight for ninth place plays out on Friday at RIM Park. A North Toronto defeat could force them into a playoff against a second-division club.
There is also the OPL Cup final to liven up the week: Guelph United and Hamilton United Elite meet on Wednesday at the Ontario Soccer Centre. Whoever wins, the trophy will have a new name for the sixth time in the tournament’s seven editions.
