Casemiro exposes the dispute between Galaxy and Inter Miami
Casemiro’s arrival at Inter Miami, announced in July, has taken an awkward turn in MLS. Will Kuntz, general manager of the LA Galaxy, said the Brazilian midfielder told the Californian club he “only wanted to play” for them, before repeating a similar line when he agreed to join Lionel Messi’s side.
What Kuntz said and why it matters
According to Kuntz, the version is simple and, for that very reason, delicate: Casemiro is said to have approached the Galaxy and expressed a preference for the club, only to tell Inter Miami two months later that he had always wanted to play in Florida. The comment came just as the league is reviewing the transfer of the 34-year-old midfielder, signed for free after leaving Manchester United.
The central point is not only the player’s change of heart. The problem lies in the discovery rights mechanism, a rule quite specific to MLS that gives a club priority to negotiate with a given athlete. The Galaxy held those rights over Casemiro, and Inter Miami stated when making the move official that they had acquired them from the Los Angeles franchise. Even so, the league opened an investigation into possible tapping up.
How the rule works and where the suspicion lies
Each MLS club can keep up to five names on its discovery list, a device used since the league was founded in 1996. In practice it is a market lock: if a player wants to move to the United States, the team that registered his name first gets the head start. In Europe there is nothing quite like it.
That is why the case draws attention. If there was prior contact outside the expected procedure, the league may conclude that Inter Miami jumped the process before settling compensation with the Galaxy. Both clubs already acknowledge an agreement over signing priority, but the terms will only be disclosed once the inquiry ends. That detail matters. A great deal.
The sporting context and what may come next
Casemiro signed through the end of the 2027 MLS season, with an option until June 2029, and arrived as another heavyweight piece in Inter Miami’s star-studded project. The choice also involved personal reasons: the Brazilian had already said he made clear to the Galaxy that he wanted Miami, citing the city, his family and the chance to play alongside Messi.
On the pitch, the start has already brought noise. In Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Columbus Crew, the midfielder scored an own goal in the very match that marked Messi’s return after the World Cup. Off the pitch, though, the noise is louder. If the investigation confirms an irregularity, MLS could impose sporting or administrative sanctions. And that revives an old debate in the league: how far flexibility can go in making room for stars without eroding its own regulatory credibility.
