Endrick became the name of 691 babies during the 2026 World Cup

The Endrick fever went beyond the stands and reached the registry offices. Between May and July this year, 691 children were registered with the name of the Brazil national team forward across the country. No other player came close to that.

In Mato Grosso do Sul alone, 12 babies were given the name Endrick during the period – eleven of them in interior municipalities, one in Campo Grande. Another 79 records scattered across Brazil combined the number 9’s name with a second name, forming compound names.

The comparison with other players is revealing. Cristiano Ronaldo appeared in 16 records as part of a compound name. Neymar was chosen as a first name by five families and featured in another seven. Memphis, Erling Haaland and Messi added up a few isolated records – but Messi still appeared in the middle of the name of another 22 children.

Why Endrick dominated the World Cup

The teenager was one of the most searched topics of the competition. Searches for the phrase “Why isn’t Endrick playing?” spiked more than 3,500% before the match against Haiti, after he stayed on the bench in the opener against Morocco. The pressure for more minutes took over social media and generated an endless cycle of memes about Carlo Ancelotti’s choices.

The coach gradually gave in. Endrick came on in the matches against Haiti, Scotland and Japan. Before the round of 16, he said he was calm with the substitute role and stated he trusted the coach. At 19, he was living his first World Cup. A real debut.

In the elimination to Norway, a 2-1 defeat in the round of 16, Endrick took the field once more – but could not prevent the end of the run. Brazil went out early. The boy’s name, however, had already entered the civil registry of nearly 700 Brazilian families.
