Kane Leads the 2026 Ballon d’Or Race with 52 Goals and Six at the World Cup

With Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo drifting ever further from the spotlight, the race for football’s most coveted individual prize has never been so wide open. And the World Cup in North America is redrawing the ranking of favorites in real time.
Kane leads, but the race is far from over
Harry Kane arrived at the World Cup off the back of a historic season with Bayern Munich: 52 goals, 14 assists, and both the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal in the bag. At the tournament, he has not slowed down. He has six goals in four matches for England, who are already in the quarterfinals. If the striker leads the Three Lions to their first title since 1966, the debate might not even exist. For English fans, that prospect alone makes every Kane goal feel historic.
Kylian Mbappé sits second in the ranking, also with six goals at the tournament and leading France’s title defense. The two top scorers dominate the statistics, but the outcome of the competition will separate one from the other.
Dembélé defends the title, Yamal can still turn things around
Ousmane Dembélé holds onto first place for now. The Paris Saint-Germain forward strung together another solid season: 25 goals, 22 assists, and the Champions League won once again. The votes already banked during the club phase keep him alive, but the World Cup will decide whether he retains the trophy.
Lamine Yamal is in a different situation. The Barcelona prodigy closed the season with 26 goals and 20 assists, yet arrived at the World Cup below expectations, still dealing with physical fatigue. Even so, any Spanish surge in the decisive rounds could put him back in contention. He is 18. The weight he carries is out of all proportion to his age.
Mohamed Salah and the surprise of a complete season
Mohamed Salah is perhaps the name that deserves the most attention. The Egyptian ended the Premier League as both its top scorer and its top assist provider, helped Liverpool win the English league and the Champions League, and still scored three times at the World Cup before Egypt were eliminated by France in the Round of 16. The award is handed out in October, but the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico will dictate who arrives with the momentum to take the stage.
