Malaysia arrive at the AFF Cup still feeling the effects of FIFA’s punishment

Almost a year after the irregular naturalization scandal that earned heavy punishments from FIFA and the AFC, Malaysia’s national team still cannot turn the page. The side arrives at the AFF Cup in an unstable situation, with an interim coach, very little training time and a group full of strong opponents ahead.

A difficult year since the scandal

Malaysia’s last official match was a 1-3 defeat to Vietnam in March, in the Asian Cup qualifiers. A poor result, but within an even more complicated context: in June, coach Peter Cklamovski left the national team, forcing the local federation to turn to a familiar face, Tan Cheng Hoe, to take charge on an interim basis right on the eve of the most important regional tournament on the calendar.

Cklamovski’s departure did not surprise anyone who follows Malaysian football closely. Since the punishment imposed by the international bodies, the national federation has been going through a turbulent period.

Little time, little preparation

As the AFF Cup is not included in the FIFA calendar, the team had only one week to train and adjust before its debut. Little, very little, for a side that is changing coaches and still trying to recover from sporting sanctions. This camp also marked Tan Cheng Hoe’s first squad selection in this interim role.

In practice, this means taking the field without collective rhythm, testing combinations in a rush. Quite a risk in a knockout tournament, where every detail counts.

A tough Group A and uncertain qualification

Malaysia were drawn into Group A alongside defending runners-up Thailand, as well as the Philippines, Myanmar and Laos. A far from simple path. Given the lack of preparation and the recent crisis, qualification for the next stage has become a real question mark, not just the usual challenge.

It remains to be seen whether Tan Cheng Hoe can, in such a short time, extract enough from a squad still shaken by the turbulence of recent months. The recent record does not help, and the tight schedule makes the mission even thornier.
