Mesloub, 16, signs first professional contract with Lens
Mezian Mesloub will formalize his professional deal with RC Lens this European summer. The 16-year-old forward, developed in the youth ranks of the northern French club, turned down offers from abroad to bet on continuity where he grew up. The decision was quick. And it says a lot about the boy.
From a lightning-fast entrance to a contract
Mesloub became a talking point in Ligue 1 in May, when he found the net five seconds after coming on in the match against Nantes – one of the fastest goals ever scored by a substitute in the competition’s history. At just 16, the precocity drew attention inside and outside France.
Interest was not slow to appear. Benfica made a formal offer, and PSV Eindhoven also signaled it was following the case. Even so, the player, who represents Portugal at Under-17 level, chose to stay at Lens. The length of the contract has not yet been officially disclosed.
Why he stayed
The answer is direct: identity. Mesloub has a strong bond with the Lens region, a working-class city that lives football intensely, and prefers a competitive environment he already knows inside out to a leap abroad at this point in his career. The club, for its part, had already made the renewal an absolute priority for the 2026 market. The parties came to an understanding quickly.
This kind of loyalty is increasingly rare in European youth football. Standout 16-year-olds in Ligue 1 tend to attract elite clubs before they even complete a hundred minutes in the top flight. Mesloub resisted. At least for now.
Pre-season with a good sign
The young forward’s confidence is not just rhetoric. Last week, during a pre-season friendly against Boulogne-sur-Mer, he scored twice. A discreet but efficient message: the level did not drop after the championship buzz.
For Lens, keeping Mesloub is more than a matter of sporting planning. It is the bet that the smartest path for the youngster’s development runs through consistency, not the speed of the showcase. If the season confirms what the pre-season suggests, the club will be glad it acted fast.
