The Champions League has become an obsession for clubs and fans, but when it comes to history there is no possible debate: Real Madrid remain isolated in the lead, with an advantage that no rival has managed to threaten in almost seventy years of the tournament.
PSG join the champions club, but the top does not change
The 2024-25 season brought quite a novelty: Paris Saint-Germain finally lifted their first European Cup, after years of heavy investment and running into disappointments. The Parisian title increases the number of champion clubs, now more than twenty, but changes nothing at the top of the table. Up there, Real Madrid remain comfortable, with a cushion that sounds almost unfair to the rest of Europe.
With fifteen triumphs, the Merengue side is not just the most successful: it is the club that practically invented the competition’s prestige. They won the first five editions, between 1956 and 1960, and returned to dominate in the modern era, adding titles between 2014 and 2024. No other team has managed to stay at the top for so many consecutive decades.
Milan, Liverpool and Bayern complete the second tier
Just behind comes Milan, with seven cups, built mainly by the winning generations of the 1980s and 1990s. Next, tied with six titles each, come Liverpool and Bayern Munich – two clubs that knew how to reinvent themselves and stay competitive in very different eras of European football.
Barcelona close the elite group with five triumphs. Most of them came during the golden period between 2006 and 2015, when the Catalan side redefined the way possession football is played at continental level.

For Real Madrid, each title reinforces a mystique that is hard to match. For the rest of Europe, all that is left is trying to reduce a gap that, for now, remains abysmal.
