Sevilla sign Fran Gonzalez, Real Madrid’s back-up goalkeeper

Real Madrid have let go of another young goalkeeper. Fran Gonzalez, 21, fell behind in the internal battle with Thibaut Courtois and Andriy Lunin and is now looking for space in Seville, where the deal was closed for an initial fee of one million euros.

A push to get off the bench

Competition in the Real Madrid goal was never easy, but with Courtois back from injury and Lunin established as the second choice, there was very little room for Gonzalez to grow. He did make his LaLiga debut in April 2025, in a 2-1 defeat to Valencia, a feat that made him the youngest goalkeeper to debut for the Merengues since Iker Casillas back in 2000. But a one-off appearance does not sustain a career. Fran needed regular minutes, and Real, at least for now, had none to offer.

The Madrid club, however, has not let the player go entirely. There is a buy-back clause built into the agreement, something common in transfers of young Spanish prospects. In practice, Real secure the right to bring the goalkeeper back should he blossom in Seville, even with the new five-year contract already signed.

Sevilla get younger after a scare

The move fits into a broader plan at the Andalusian club. Sevilla finished the 2025-26 season just one point above the relegation zone, a result that served as a warning and triggered a considerable overhaul of the squad. Big, experienced names left the club: Alexis Sanchez, Adnan Januzaj, Orjan Nyland and Nemanja Gudelj all departed, while Cesar Azpilicueta retired.

In return, the board has been betting on newer and cheaper faces. Left-back Julio Diaz, 21, arrived from Atletico Madrid, and centre-back Arouna Sangante came in from Le Havre. Fran Gonzalez completes that renewal package, reinforcing a project that is banking on youth to avoid scares like last season’s.

A tough start for Luis Garcia

The goalkeeper arrives with backing from Spain’s youth setup, having played up to the under-21 level. Now he faces the task of fighting for minutes at a Sevilla side beginning its first full campaign under Luis Garcia with a far from gentle calendar: an opener against Rayo Vallecano on 15 August, followed by direct meetings with Athletic Bilbao and Atletico Madrid in the next two rounds.

For Real Madrid, the exit is another chapter in the policy of developing, selling and keeping the door open for a return. For Fran Gonzalez, it is a concrete chance to become a starter and prove, away from Courtois’s shadow, that his early debut was not an isolated flash.
