Tchaouna signs a five-year deal with Coventry for £20 million
Coventry City are wasting no time in building their squad for the return to the Premier League. The club announced the signing of 22-year-old left winger Loum Tchaouna from Burnley for £20 million – and the Frenchman arrives with a clear mission: not to repeat what he went through last season, relegation.
From Turf Moor to the CBS Arena
Tchaouna spent just one year at Burnley, playing 32 matches, scoring three goals and failing to prevent the Clarets’ drop to the Championship. The experience was bitter, but enough to establish him as a player of interest in the English market. Coventry saw an opportunity there – and went after the player before other clubs joined the race.
With a five-year contract signed, the forward arrives as the club’s second signing for the upcoming campaign. Before him, midfielder Frank Onyeka, who had played on loan last season, made his move permanent in June. Two reinforcements with Premier League DNA. The message is clear.
A résumé built across three leagues
A product of the youth ranks at Rennes in France, Tchaouna moved through Salernitana and Lazio before crossing the English Channel. That’s three major European leagues before the age of 23 – Ligue 1, Serie A and the Premier League. He is not the typical profile of someone still learning the trade.
“I played in Ligue 1, in Serie A and now I’m in the Premier League, the best league in the world. I have a lot of experience for my age,” the player himself said. No arrogance – just fact.
A debut against the reigning champion
The context surrounding this signing goes beyond the names. Coventry have not been in the English top flight since the 2000-01 season. That’s more than two decades of absence, and the return could not be more challenging: Frank Lampard’s side open the campaign on 21 August, away from home, against Arsenal – the reigning league champions. Tchaouna promised to bring “energy, determination and leadership”. The test will come with the very first whistle.
