IEM Cologne 2026 reaches Stage 3 with 16 teams fighting for eight playoff spots

With every edition, the Cathedral of Counter-Strike lives up to its nickname. The Intel Extreme Masters Cologne 2026 has cut its initial field of 32 teams in half and now enters the penultimate stage before the playoffs – Stage 3, which begins on June 11 and will decide who actually gets to fight for the title at the circuit’s most traditional event.

How this stage works and what is at stake

The format is Swiss. Simple in theory, brutal in practice: each team needs to rack up three wins to advance. Three losses and they are out. There is no gray area, no second chance. By the end of June 15 – the stage’s final round – all 16 competitors will have met exactly one of those two fates.

That means eight teams will be eliminated before they even see the playoffs. And given the pace of play, but also the accumulated fatigue, that difference can weigh heavily.

First round: no easy matchups

June 11 opens with eight head-to-head duels between invited and qualified teams. Vitality faces FUT Esports. Natus Vincere takes on Team Spirit. Falcons and G2 meet in one of the most anticipated games of the round. MongolZ against BetBoom Team, Parivision against 9z Team, Aurora against Monte, Furia facing B8 and Mouz closing things out with Legacy.

None of these matchups is a free pass. G2 are in good form and could complicate the Falcons’ path. Spirit and NaVi have a history packed with closely contested matches. Furia, representing Brazil, will also spare no effort to leave B8 by the wayside.

What comes next

Whoever survives Stage 3 goes straight to the playoffs, scheduled to take place between June 18 and 21. That is where the champion will be decided. With this edition’s field, any prediction looks risky – and that is exactly why Cologne remains the most relevant tournament of the year in the CS2 competitive scene.
