Andrey Santos leaves Chelsea and signs with Manchester United

The deal was closed in the last few hours. Andrey Santos, the 22-year-old midfielder developed at Vasco da Gama, ends his cycle at Chelsea and becomes a Manchester United signing. The English club urgently needed a replacement for Casemiro, who did not renew and left Old Trafford at the end of his contract. The solution came from within the Premier League itself.

Two years at Stamford Bridge, but consolidation only came at the end

Andrey’s path at Chelsea was tortuous. Signed in 2023 when he was still a minor, the club had to wait for his 18th birthday to register him officially. In the meantime, two loans followed: the first to Nottingham Forest, with little playing time, and the second to Racing Strasbourg, in France, where he gained match rhythm. It was only last season that the Brazilian truly emerged at Stamford Bridge, racking up 43 matches. Numbers enough to draw attention, but not to secure his future at the London club.

United bring in a young profile

Discovered at Vasco at 16, he already carries European mileage and a spot on Brazil’s provisional squad list for the World Cup, although he was left out of the 26 called up who travelled to the tournament.

The value of the transaction was not officially disclosed, but it is a signing United treated with some urgency. It is worth recalling that the club was also trying to close a deal for Ederson, of Atalanta, for around 40 million euros, but medical complications stalled the process. That negotiation remains undefined. Andrey therefore emerges not only as a solution for Casemiro’s position, but also as a bet on a younger profile with room to grow in value.

What to expect from the Brazilian at United

Andrey Santos arrives with something rare: European experience accumulated in three different countries before the age of 23. England, Germany and France are already on his CV. At United, the expectation is that he will fight for a starting place from the outset, given the void left in midfield. The club needed someone who could protect the defence and circulate the ball intelligently. The Rio native has these characteristics on the coaching staff’s radar. Now it is about confirming it on the pitch.
