Jersey auction raises €100,000 to fight cancer in Brittany

Jersey auction raises €100,000 to fight cancer in Brittany

On Tuesday, 7 July, the exhibition park in Lanester, a town in the French region of Brittany, became a stage for solidarity in its purest form. The Mouillons le Maillot 56 association, chaired by Olivier Rouzic, held an auction of 39 sports jerseys and managed to raise 14,350 euros in a single evening – on top of handing over a cheque for 100,230 euros to the League Against Cancer.

The shirt that broke every record

The highlight of the night was the jersey of Brazilian defender Marquinhos, captain of Paris Saint-Germain. The item sold for 2,400 euros, more than double the previous record of 1,188 euros. The buyer, from Caudan, was identified only as Ditch.

The figure says a lot about the appeal of Brazilian football even in the French countryside. Marquinhos, who has defended PSG for more than a decade and is one of the pillars of the national team, has a name that sells – and, it seems, also raises money. For football fans across the Premier League world who follow European stars closely, it is a reminder that a player’s shirt can carry meaning far beyond the pitch.

A tough year, a surprising result

The road to that figure was not easy. The association faced a significant drop in partners in 2025 – around a hundred fewer compared with previous editions. In June, the running total was no more than 40,000 euros. Reaching over 100,000 means, in practice, tripling it in a matter of weeks.

“It was very difficult this year. We are very proud,” summed up Maud Raclet, of Mouillons le Maillot 56. No frills. No canned speech. Just the weight of what they had built.

Where the money goes

The funds handed to the League Against Cancer have a defined destination. Jean-Michel Bonhomme, of the entity’s Lorient committee, explained that the money will support initiatives helping carers of cancer patients – a group often invisible in public health policy. Fifteen thousand euros will go specifically to the Ysae association, which works on that front.

It is the kind of initiative that shows how sport can be a vehicle for real social impact – not just a metaphor for overcoming adversity, but a concrete tool for funding those in need.
