Van Dijk Enters the Final Year of His Contract and AC Milan Sense an Opportunity

Liverpool are facing one of their biggest transitions in years — and Virgil van Dijk sits right at the center of it. With the Dutch defender and captain’s contract set to expire in June 2026, transfer rumors have gained momentum, and AC Milan have emerged as the most concrete suitor so far.

Milan monitor the Reds’ captain

According to reports, Milan’s technical staff see Van Dijk as a key piece to strengthen the rossoneri backline next season. The Italian club already has heavyweight names in the squad — Christian Pulisic and Luka Modrić are part of the project — and adding a defender of the Dutchman’s stature would round out the profile of the team the new head coach wants to build.

At 33, Van Dijk would not be a typical market bet. Yet the impact he generates on and off the pitch, combined with his experience as a defensive reference point in one of Europe’s most demanding leagues, justifies the interest. There are also rumors that make the trail look less solid: sources close to the English club rule out any imminent exit, insisting that the captain is part of the new manager’s plans for next season.

Anfield under reconstruction — and the defense is bleeding

The problem goes beyond Van Dijk’s contract. With Ibrahima Konaté leaving for Real Madrid and Joe Gomez’s situation still unresolved — he too has a deal until 2026 and has publicly admitted he does not know where he will play next season — Liverpool’s new coach could be left with alarmingly few options at the back. For now, young Jérémy Jacquet and Italy’s Giovanni Leoni appear as alternatives, but that would be a heavy burden for profiles still in development.

The club has gone through an abrupt shift: Jürgen Klopp left his post at the end of last season, Arne Slot lasted only one cycle, and figures such as Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson no longer wear the red shirt. Van Dijk is now one of the last remaining survivors of that era. Wataru Endo, signed from Stuttgart in 2023 for €16 million, faces a similar situation, with an estimated value of around €22 million; the gap between the parties remains wide, and no renewal is scheduled.

The Crisis Extends to Midfield

Harvey Elliott adds another layer of uncertainty. After a loan season at Aston Villa with reduced minutes, the midfielder returns without clarity about his future. Previous interest from RB Leipzig led Liverpool to set an asking price of €50 million, but the lack of rhythm in Birmingham has probably lowered that market value. The new manager inherits a squad in institutional disarray — and the summer window will demand far more than a few touch-ups.
