Team Liquid crash out in Stage 1 of IEM Cologne 2026 with just two wins
North American organization Team Liquid ended their run at the Cologne Major before even getting close to what matters. With a 2-3 record in the Swiss stage, the team was eliminated in Stage 1 and finished between 9th and 11th place in a field of 32 teams. No prize money. No advancement. Just the ride back home.
What happened inside the server
The Swiss format demands three wins to advance and punishes any accumulated slip-up. Liquid reached two and went no further. The only result worth keeping was a narrow win over BIG, 13 to 10. The rest was decline: BetBoom took them down 13 to 9, MIBR closed it out 13 to 10, and FlyQuest applied a clean 2-0 that sealed the elimination.
The roster of EliGE, malbsMd, NAF, siuhy and ultimate, under coach flashie and with jokasteve as substitute, simply never found a rhythm. They lacked the tactical variation to destabilize opponents who, in terms of budget and infrastructure, sit far below Liquid in the CS2 ecosystem. FlyQuest, who delivered the final blow, is exactly that kind of team.
A pattern that can no longer be ignored
Cologne is not an isolated accident. Liquid keep piling up mediocre results in an increasingly competitive scene, where brand prestige doesn’t buy rounds. Finishing in the bottom third of a tournament of this size puts the organization in the same basket as teams operating on a fraction of their resources. That hurts differently when you have the history and the budget they do.
The community has already run out of patience. Forums and social media are full of demands for structural changes, not just one-off player swaps. The question going around is no longer “who replaces whom,” but rather what kind of team Liquid wants to build in CS2. The answer, so far, hasn’t shown up inside the server.
