Pereira Accuses Ciryl Gane of Illegal Blows and Takes Aim at Referee Herb Dean

Alex Pereira did not swallow his defeat at UFC White House. The former two-division champion made it clear that he was the victim of strikes to the back of the head during his bout with Ciryl Gane, and that referee Herb Dean simply ignored the infractions. The controversy has already spilled beyond the cage and reached the top of the UFC.
What happened inside the octagon
In the second round, Gane landed a jab that took the fight to the ground. That is where the trouble began. The Frenchman unleashed a frantic series of punches and elbows — and Pereira claims that many of those blows landed on the back of the head, an area protected by MMA rules. Seconds later, back on their feet, Gane ended the fight with more accurate strikes, securing the interim heavyweight title.
For Poatan, the problem was not only Gane. The Brazilian was harsh on Dean, demanded that the veteran retire, and even considered filing a formal appeal against the result. He himself admitted, however, that overturning the outcome would be unlikely. Because officiating debates like this shape how fans worldwide judge a result, the case quickly went global.
Dana White takes sides — with caveats
“Pereira never complains. This guy never makes excuses after fights,” said White. For him, the fact that Pereira was so bothered is a sign that he genuinely believes he was wronged.
White acknowledged that Pereira took blows to the back of the head, but noted that in fast ground scrambles it is not always possible to prevent an illegal strike from slipping through. Even so, he called for more attention from the referee: “Dean could have warned him, flagged the back of the head.” As for a possible official review, the CEO was direct: “That’s a matter for the commission, not me.”
What is at stake for Pereira
The loss cost him dearly. Pereira was one win away from becoming the first athlete to hold titles in three different divisions in UFC history — a feat that would have cemented his name among the greats of the sport. Instead, he watched Gane walk away with the interim heavyweight title.
Now, the road back demands patience and, probably, another high-level fight before any title shot. Meanwhile, his public campaign against Dean continues at full steam. Whether anything will change behind the scenes, only time will tell.
