Lucy Bronze extends her Chelsea contract for another season

England full-back Lucy Bronze has signed a contract extension with Chelsea and will stay at the club for another year. The announcement was made this Thursday, two days after her previous deal expired – a detail that neatly sums up the speed with which the Blues have been handling the women’s market this summer.
A key piece since her arrival
Bronze arrived in London in 2024 as one of the first signings made by head coach Sonia Bompastor at the club. Her initial contract ran for two years, which would have made her a free agent this summer. The one-year extension therefore puts an end to any speculation about her immediate future.
Shaped by spells at Lyon and Barcelona before returning to England, the defender established herself as a starter even after the arrival of Australian Ellie Carpenter, another top-level right-back. The solution was simple: Bronze showed enough versatility to play as a central defender when both are in the same squad. Adaptability that is worth its weight in gold.
On confirming her stay, the player was direct: “I feel this is the right decision for me right now. I’ve really enjoyed the last two years at Chelsea and back in England. I feel the club is moving forward, and the move to Stamford Bridge makes everything even more exciting.”
Relief amid a frustrating window
The news comes at a time when Chelsea supporters needed some good tidings. The team lost Catarina Macario in March and Sam Kerr at the end of the season, leaving a considerable gap up front. Attempts to fill it have not gone well so far. Khadija Shaw, who finished as the WSL’s top scorer and led Manchester City to the title after a ten-year wait, renewed with the Citizens for four seasons. Sweden’s Felicia Schroder, 19 years old and with 30 goals in the Swedish league in 2025, joined Real Madrid despite an offer that would reportedly have been a world record for women’s football. Spain’s Salma Paralluelo, a two-time world champion and standout in the Champions League final, turned down the Blues’ salary offer – according to available information, her demands exceed one million pounds per year.
Bronze is the fifth player to renew with the club this window, following Lauren James, Sandy Baltimore, Becky Spencer and Bompastor herself. But two important names still leave fans in suspense: goalkeeper Hannah Hampton and forward Aggie Beever-Jones saw their contracts expire on 30 June, and so far the club has said nothing about their futures. Beever-Jones and goalkeeper Katie Cox have clauses that allow an automatic one-year extension – it remains to be seen whether Chelsea will trigger that option.
On the positive side of the ledger, Ireland captain Katie McCabe strengthens the left-back slot after leaving Arsenal, which frees Sandy Baltimore to play further forward. And with Niamh Charles increasingly linked with a move to Manchester City, Chelsea is treating the squad reshuffle as an urgent priority before the start of the next WSL season.
