Spain are world champions, but Real Madrid were left out of the picture
Spain won the 2026 World Cup, but in Madrid the celebration was only half a party. With Real Madrid completely absent from the champion squad, the one who saved the capital’s pride was Atlético Madrid — and only just.
Two Madrids, opposite fates
Coach Luis de la Fuente made a choice that became controversial before a ball was even kicked: he left out every Real Madrid player from the list and called up no fewer than eight Barcelona players. It was the first time in history the Merengue club had no representative at a World Cup. Unprecedented — and, for Real fans, humiliating.
Atlético, meanwhile, placed three names in the champion squad — Álex Baena, Marcos Llorente and Marc Pubill. On top of that, Rodri, developed by the Colchonero club before joining Manchester City, is considered part of that Atlético identity. Little, but enough for the red side of Madrid to have some reason to celebrate.
La Masia dominates, the Bernabéu watches
The champion Spain side was, in practice, a mosaic of two regions: Catalonia and the Basque Country. Barcelona contributed directly with eight players. If we count those who came through the La Masia academy — such as Marc Cucurella and Alejandro Grimaldo — the number passes ten. The Basque Country also carried real weight, with players from Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad and Osasuna, including Mikel Merino.
Madrid? Left as a bystander. And Cucurella’s case sums up the irony well: the full-back was transferred from Chelsea to Real Madrid during the tournament, but FIFA uses the initial list to hand out medals. So when he lifted the gold, he was still, officially, a Chelsea player. A detail that says a lot.
Real Madrid: ten players, no trophy
The Bernabéu club arrived at the World Cup with ten representatives across different national teams. The one who came closest to anything was Kylian Mbappé, the tournament’s top scorer. But France stopped in the semifinals. A disappointing result — and one that practically ended Mbappé’s chances of fighting for the Ballon d’Or.
The rest of the Merengue group delivered very little. Rüdiger and Germany did not go beyond expectations. Vinícius Júnior and Brazil fell before the big decision. Valverde, Güler, Endrick and Alaba saw their countries go out early. Bellingham and Brahim Díaz played well individually, but not enough to carry their teams to the final. In the end, the 2026 World Cup was a clear mirror of a structural shift in Spanish football. La Masia and the Basque academies called the shots. Real Madrid, used to dominating narratives, this time only watched.
