Mexico secure their place at the 2026 World Cup and open the race for group qualification

The group stage of the 2026 World Cup enters a decisive week. Mexico are already qualified for the round of 16, but in almost every other group the contest remains open – and the next games could bury dreams or open unexpected paths to the knockouts.

The new format complicates everything – and benefits some

The 2026 World Cup brought a relevant structural change: for the first time, 48 teams contest the group stage, divided into 12 groups of four teams. The top two in each group advance directly, but eight of the twelve best third-placed teams also go through. It is an extra cushion – and it is transforming the tactical calculations of coaches and analysts.

FIFA kept the classic tiebreaker criteria: first you look at the head-to-head between teams level on points, then overall goal difference, then goals scored. Only as a last resort does the FIFA ranking come into play. With 12 simultaneous groups, following all the permutations is a science in itself.

The hottest scenarios of the week

In Group A, Mexico have already secured top spot after beating South Korea. The dispute now is for the second place, with the South Koreans in the favourite position – a draw against South Africa is enough, as long as the Czech Republic do not overcome the Mexicans and overturn the goal difference. A delicate situation for Bafana Bafana and the Czechs, who drew 1-1 and need to win in order not to go home.

Group B has two candidates packed at the top. Canada lead on goal difference after a 6-0 thrashing of Qatar, but face Switzerland in a match worth top spot in the group. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar play an all-or-nothing duel: whoever loses is out.

In Group C, Brazil and Morocco drew 1-1 in the previous round and still need to confirm qualification. Scotland took advantage, beat Haiti 1-0, and arrive at the game against the Moroccans in a position to surprise. A wide-open group.

The United States take to the field in Group D against Australia in a clash that could decide who tops the group. On the other side, Paraguay and Turkey have a life-or-death battle – the loser depends on other results to survive.

Argentina and Brazil on the radar, but no easy ride

Argentina and England lead their groups unbeaten, but still need at least one more positive result to confirm their place. The Albiceleste face Algeria in Houston; the English take on New Zealand in Los Angeles. In theory, manageable matches – but the World Cup has no easy game on paper.

Brazil, beyond their mission in Group C, also appear in Group I with another team of the same name. The coincidence of naming in the context of the tournament draws attention, but what matters is that no path to the knockouts is guaranteed without sweat.

Next week promises to define who survives – and who goes home ahead of time.
