MLS Players Already Surpass 6,000 Minutes Played at the 2026 World Cup

Two days of the Round of 32 were enough to make it clear: MLS has arrived at the World Cup stronger than ever. Active players from the North American league have already accumulated 6,075 minutes played in the tournament, and that number will keep rising sharply.

Paraguay Provided the Most Concrete Example

The Albirroja eliminated Germany on penalties, and a large part of that achievement carries an MLS address. Four active league players were on the pitch: Andrés Cubas, of Vancouver Whitecaps FC, lasted the full 120 minutes; Matías Galarza, recently out of his loan at Atlanta United, also went from start to finish; Miguel Almirón, still registered at Atlanta, contributed 90 minutes; and Braian Ojeda, of Real Salt Lake, came on and added a further 21.

In total, there were 351 minutes of MLS players in a historic victory over the German national team. And Paraguay could still accumulate more in the next round, against France.

Countries and Players Who Are Driving the Numbers

Paraguay is not the only nation leaning on MLS. According to official data, 45 currently active players in the league were called up for the 2026 World Cup, representing 19 different countries — including the United States, Canada and Mexico as hosts, plus nations from South America, Africa, Asia and Europe.

Among the most minutes played, the names are from leagues including Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands, Turkey, the English second division, Qatar and Brazil.

Of the 45 players with an active contract in the league, 34 have already played. If former MLS players who are also competing in the tournament are included, the total rises to 13,314 minutes, shared between 105 footballers with some connection to North American football.

A Growth Curve That Is Hard to Ignore

The historical figures say it all. In 2014, MLS players accumulated 4,381 minutes at the World Cup. In 2022, the total fell to 3,167. Now, in 2026, they have already passed 6,000 — and the tournament is far from over.

The figure of 150 starters throughout the tournament reinforces the argument: this is not window dressing. The league has grown in quality, attracts players in their competitive prime and is present on the biggest stage in world football in an increasingly concrete way. The all-time record for minutes played is no coincidence. It is a consequence.
