Vozinha, the hero against Spain, becomes a V.League club’s target

A club from southern Vietnam has made a formal approach to sign Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, days after he produced one of the most surprising performances of the Confederations Cup group stage – holding Spain to a draw that no one was betting on.

From the wall against Spain to the Vietnamese radar

Vozinha did not let Spain score. Simple as that. The Spanish side, reigning world champions, found no way through against the Cape Verdean goalkeeper, and the result – an improbable draw – became a talking point across the international sports press. The next day, as established by the editorial team, a club with financial muscle in the V.League had already taken the first step to bring him to Vietnamese football.

The move is consistent with a clear trend in the league: teams from the south of the country are investing in high-level foreigners, especially those with a background in heavyweight competitions. Vozinha has that résumé. He spent years with Chaves in the Portuguese Second Division, and has been an undisputed starter for the Cape Verde national team for more than a decade.

A difficult negotiation, but not ruled out

The intermediary involved in the talks is experienced and leaves no room for illusions. According to him, the chances of the deal going through are around 50%. The main reason: Vozinha is 40 years old. For many clubs, that already ends the conversation. But the agent points out that the veteran has just ended his contract with Chaves and is technically free – which makes any negotiation much easier.

The agent’s position on the way of working is clear and without middle ground. “A team from the south has signaled interest in bringing him in. But I do not work with a trial or in-person assessment without guarantees. The round-trip ticket from the United States to Vietnam is expensive. If the club really wants to move forward, it needs to sign a memorandum and advance the costs. Without that, it stays just talk after a good match,” the middleman stated.

The interested club was not publicly identified, but the profile drawn points to a regional powerhouse: a good squad of local players, ambition to play in AFC competitions or the Shopee Cup next season, and room to use a foreigner slot in the goalkeeper position – something rare in the V.League, where that spot is usually reserved for forwards or midfielders.

What a signing like this would mean

Bringing in Vozinha would not be just a sporting bet. The symbolism is obvious: a goalkeeper who has just stopped Spain would wear the shirt of a Vietnamese club. In terms of marketing and international visibility, the impact would be considerable – and that calculation is probably at the center of the decision.

The question is whether any executive will sign the cheque. Vietnamese football has imported names with European pedigree before, but rarely anyone with such recent exposure. The market is watching. The ball is now in the clubs’ court.
