Dempsey demands wins as the US backs Pochettino through 2030

Clint Dempsey got straight to the point when discussing the future of the United States national team: to keep fans close ahead of the 2030 World Cup, you have to win. The answer carried extra weight coming only days after Mauricio Pochettino’s renewal, confirmed for another full cycle after a campaign that ended in a 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup.

Dempsey’s message and the logic of the new cycle

The former forward, still one of the USMNT’s greatest symbols and the team’s joint all-time top scorer, summed up the whole package in one word: win. In his view, the team needs to score, defend well and stir a reaction in the stands. It makes sense. In short tournaments, identity without results almost never holds interest for long.

Home form, though, gave the project some ballast. Convincing wins over Paraguay, Australia and Bosnia and Herzegovina showed a more aggressive, less inhibited side. The heavy stumble against Belgium exposed limits but did not undo the internal assessment that Pochettino deserves real time to work. Now he will have what almost no recent US coach has had: a full cycle to build a squad, fine-tune the spine and arrive ready for the big stage.

The bottlenecks the national team must solve

There are obvious gaps. The most serious are at centre-back and in goal. Chris Richards should remain the defensive reference, but Tim Ream, close to 39, is unlikely to be a long-term solution again. That forces the staff to speed up the search for a reliable partner, whether among already tested names like Mark McKenzie and Miles Robinson or in less obvious bets.

In goal, the race is open. Matt Freese and Matt Turner start ahead thanks to their World Cup experience, but the picture is far from settled. Chris Brady, Diego Kochen and Duran Ferree appear as options to apply pressure. In a packed calendar, that competition stops being a detail. It becomes a central theme.

Regional titles, the Olympics and the Copa America on the radar

Before 2030, the United States face a heavy run of tests: the Nations League, the 2027 Gold Cup, the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 and, by all indications, another Copa America on American soil. That is where Dempsey’s words need to become practice. Winning the next Nations League would already be a clear signal. Taking the Gold Cup with a full-strength squad, even more so.

There is also a less obvious but decisive demand: competing properly again against elite national teams. It has been more than a decade since the Americans beat a side in FIFA’s top 10. For a country that wants to arrive strong at the next World Cup, that weighs. Pochettino has a new contract, room to manoeuvre and enough events ahead. What is missing is the main thing. Turning promise into results.
