Marquinhos apologises to the people after Brazil’s World Cup exit: “Learn the lesson”

Brazil are out of the World Cup. The 2-1 defeat to Norway in the round of 16, this Sunday (the 5th), ended another Seleção run earlier than expected – and captain Marquinhos was the first to stand before the cameras to answer for the result.
What the captain said
“Now it is about learning the lesson and apologising to the Brazilian people,” declared the defender, his voice heavy. Marquinhos also asked the fans to place their trust in the new generation to come: “I ask the people to support them from now on; there are four years for them to work towards achieving big things at the next World Cup.”
It is not the first time the Paris Saint-Germain defender has taken on the role of bearer of bad news. In 2022, it was he who missed the decisive penalty against Croatia in the quarter-finals in Qatar. This time, the pain is different – the elimination came earlier, and the sense of waste weighs even more.
A game of squandered chances
Marquinhos himself acknowledged that the Seleção had enough to go through. “We had a penalty, other chances. At a World Cup, whoever makes fewer mistakes ends up coming out victorious,” he analysed. Norway were efficient. Brazil were not.
This is exactly the point that will inflame the debate in the coming days. The Seleção created, even found the net, but did not know how to close out the game when they had the chance. In World Cup knockouts, a margin for error is a luxury no one can afford – and Brazil paid dearly for every slip.
What lies ahead
With the early exit, an inevitable cycle of rebuilding opens up. The CBF will have four years to rethink the project, renew the squad and find a path that does not depend on individuals to work. The current generation, led by Marquinhos, leaves the World Cup without the trophy and with a direct message to the fans: a request for patience. Whether the people will grant it is another story.
