Lacroix for €55m, Nmecha and Araújo: the summer window is already heating up

The summer transfer window has officially opened, and clubs are already hard at work – even with much of the football world focused on the World Cup. Behind the scenes, sporting directors and recruitment teams are working at pace to close deals before the market truly heats up. Three moves in particular have dominated the conversations of recent days.
Chelsea close in on Lacroix for €55 million
Chelsea are close to sealing the signing of defender Maxence Lacroix, currently at Crystal Palace. Negotiations with the neighbouring London club are advanced, with the deal estimated at €55 million. The French defender, called up to play at the World Cup with France, is expected to sort out his situation and report to Stamford Bridge shortly after his participation in the tournament ends. The move reflects the London club’s intention to strengthen its defence with young, high-level names. Lacroix, who arrived at Crystal Palace not long ago, has already shown enough quality to attract interest from bigger clubs in the Premier League.
Newcastle eye Nmecha as a Plan B for midfield
Newcastle United have placed the name of midfielder Felix Nmecha, of Borussia Dortmund, on their list of possible signings. The move is directly linked to the uncertainty surrounding Sandro Tonali, who could leave the north-east English club this window. Tottenham have already attempted a bid for the German player and saw the proposal rejected. The Germans do not intend to negotiate for less than €70 million for the 25-year-old.
Nmecha has a solid contract with Dortmund and has been earning more space in the German national team. The high price could complicate any negotiation, but Newcastle have shown a willingness to invest heavily since being acquired by the Saudi consortium.
Araújo, with an €80m clause, attracts a Premier League trio
Manchester United and Chelsea have joined Arsenal in the race for Uruguayan left-back Maxi Araújo, of Sporting CP. The 26-year-old was eliminated in the group stage of the World Cup with Uruguay – a disappointment for the Celeste, but news that could speed up his transfer to England.
The early return means Araújo comes to the negotiating table with more time available before the window closes. There is, however, a concrete obstacle: the release clause in his contract with the Portuguese club is set at €80 million. With three Premier League giants chasing the same target, whoever blinks first could gain the advantage.
