Lewandowski signs with Chicago Fire and becomes Designated Player in MLS

Chicago Fire FC confirmed this Tuesday the signing of Polish striker Robert Lewandowski, who ended his contract with Barcelona last season. The Major League Soccer club has already designated him as a Designated Player – the league’s top category for major international stars. It is the loudest arrival in MLS since Lionel Messi landed at Inter Miami.

Who is the player arriving in Chicago

Lewandowski is not just another European at the end of his contract chasing American dollars. The Pole has scored more than 700 goals for club and country, topped the scoring charts in the Bundesliga and La Liga for eight years, and carries in his luggage a Champions League won in 2020 with Bayern Munich – with a 1-0 victory in the final. With Barcelona, he left through the front door: three La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey and three Spanish Super Cups in just over three seasons.

Before Munich, the striker also passed through Borussia Dortmund, where his career gained European prominence. In total, there were ten Bundesliga titles distributed between the two German clubs.

What Fire expects from this signing

Sporting director and head coach Gregg Berhalter was direct in the club’s statement: “From the day Joe Mansueto and I met, we set out to build a world-class club that inspires greatness, unites Chicago and wins championships. Robert embodies these values.” Berhalter had already made clear weeks earlier that the goal was to bring in players capable of changing the franchise’s level – and went so far as to place the Pole on the same step as Messi in terms of quality.

Fire currently occupies a modest position in the MLS East. The arrival of a center-forward with this track record does not solve the squad on its own, but it changes the club’s narrative and attracts the attention of sponsors, media and, above all, fans in a city that has lived under the shadow of Inter Miami’s success since the Argentine’s arrival. Chicago now has its own answer.

What changes for the league

In recent years, MLS has been building a showcase of stars at the end of their European cycle. Lewandowski, at 36, arrives with still-relevant physical capacity and a name recognized in any market. For the league, it is one more argument in the battle for a global audience. For the striker, it is a chance to close out his career in a physically less demanding environment – but with guaranteed visibility.

The financial details of the contract were not disclosed, but the Designated Player status allows Fire to pay a salary above the league’s salary cap, which indicates a significant investment by American standards.
