Saudi Pro League sends 47 players to the 2026 World Cup

The Saudi league has never carried so much weight at a World Cup. With the 2026 World Cup approaching, at least 47 footballers contracted to Saudi Pro League clubs will be present at the tournament – representing 18 different national teams. The number already says a lot about what the Arab championship has become over the last three years.

Al Hilal lead the way, but the dominance is collective

Al Hilal top the list with 12 call-ups. Among them are heavyweight names: Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, French full-back Théo Hernandez, Portuguese midfielder Ruben Neves and Uruguayan forward Darwin Núñez. Ten of those twelve represent the Saudi Arabia national team, which reflects the club’s strategy of blending imported stars with the local core.

Al Nassr and Al Ahli appear just behind, with nine players each. At the Riyadh club, the obvious highlight is Cristiano Ronaldo, called up by Portugal alongside João Félix.

25 Saudis and a growing global presence

Of the total of 47 athletes, 25 play for Saudi Arabia’s own national team – spread across nine different clubs. This shows that the project is not only about importing: the league is also serving as a base for the development of local football, with players such as Salem Al Dawsari, Nasser Al Dawsari and Firas Al Buraikan confirmed on the Green Falcons’ list.

The other 22 players carry passports from countries such as Brazil, France, Senegal, Uruguay, Turkey, Mexico and Ghana, among others. Roger Ibañez will represent the Brazilian national team coming from Al Ahli. Fabinho, who moved from Liverpool to Al Ittihad in 2023, is also confirmed for Brazil. Julián Quiñones, a naturalised Mexican, comes from Al Qadsiah.

What this means for global football

Until recently, playing in a Gulf league was practically a veiled retirement. That paradigm has been broken. The 2026 World Cup will work as a real thermometer: if players like Darwin Núñez, Théo Hernandez and Cristiano Ronaldo arrive at the tournament in top form, the narrative that the Saudi Pro League weakens athletes will become increasingly difficult to sustain.

The Saudi championship has never been so decisive beyond its borders. And the summer of 2026 will show – on the pitch – just how real this transformation is.
