Croatia and Panama meet in Group L with no margin for error

Croatia and Panama meet in Group L with no margin for error

In the early hours of Wednesday, Toronto’s BMO Field hosts a clash that could define the fate of two national teams at the 2026 World Cup. Croatia and Panama arrive at the second game of Group L with their backs against the wall: one more defeat and elimination becomes almost inevitable.

The weight of history against the pressure of the moment

For Croatia, the pressure has a different dimension. Runners-up in 2018 and third place in Qatar in 2022, Zlatko Dalic’s side were beaten 4-2 by England in their opener – a result that would not fit even the worst possible script. The team that revealed Croatian football’s power to the world now needs to win or it is out.

Panama have less history to defend, but the squeeze is the same. Thomas Christiansen is still waiting for the team’s first goal and first point at this World Cup. The loss to Ghana in the opening round was painful at the end: the Central Americans recorded 11 shots and could have left with an honorable draw, but stoppage time took its toll. Even so, Panama’s attack was more productive, averaging 1.8 goals – including four against the Dominican Republic and two over South Africa.

That Panamanian attacking record is not cosmetic. Cecilio Waterman leads the attack alongside José Luis Rodríguez and Yoel Bárcenas, with Christiansen’s 3-4-3 exploiting width down the channels. Amir Murillo on the right and Andrés Andrade on the left act as outlets – and Croatia have not looked impermeable out wide.

Modric reaches 200 caps. The Croatian defense still worries

Luka Modric plays his 200th match for the national team. His presence in midfield changes the tactical calculations of any opponent – he is the kind of player who dictates the tempo even when he appears inactive. Alongside Mateo Kovačić, he forms one of the most qualified creative pairings in the tournament.

But the opening night against England exposed a wound: the Croatian back line made errors that do not match the group’s accumulated experience. And on the bench, Andrej Kramarić has racked up 36 goals in 117 appearances – giving Dalic plenty of ammunition to change the game at any moment.

What to expect from the clash

The ingredients are all there: two porous defenses, two attacks capable of scoring, and a pressure that rarely shows up so early in a group. Panama will create chances – their recent record guarantees it. But the quality of Croatia’s midfield, if it works as it knows how, should be too much to be contained for 90 minutes.

Whoever loses will need an improbable run of results to qualify. In football, miracles do happen – but it is better not to rely on them.
